Messiaen’s “Harawi”
January 30 @ 8:00 PM
A rare Houston performance from Grammy Award winning classical vocalist Julia Bullock, soprano, admired both for her critically-acclaimed performances at the Metropolitan Opera as well as original, boundary-breaking recitals of astounding intensity. Appearing here with frequent collaborator and virtuosic soloist Conor Hanick, piano, these two luminous musicians shine their collective light on one of the vocal masterpieces of the 20th century: Olivier Messiaen’s heartrending Harawi. The12 songs to his original texts draw on themes of love, death, destruction, creation, and cosmic existence. The music shifts effortlessly from the influence of underground jazz in wartine Paris to a Peru of legendary folk song, where monkeys jabber and dancers shake their ankle bracelets. Presented as part of the DaCamera concert series. boxoffice@dacamera.com
